Title: apart
Fandom/Original: Pokemon: Leon/Raihan
Rating: Gen
Triggers: NA
Summary: It had been weeks since they had seen one another, and all Leon had to say was, 'Come to Wyndon right away.'
ConCrit: Y

It wasn't that Leon was a neglectful lover, or forgot about him whenever they were apart. It was just that Leon was more affectionate than effusive, and as a result, his texts and calls didn't convey the warmth that he had when they were physically together. Besides, Raihan himself wasn't much better in that regard. Apart from the occasional Xs, his returning texts were probably no different in tone than the texts he had sent from before they started going out. Still, one would think that Leon could spare a moment for romance during work-related calls. All he said over the phone was, 'You're not going to want to miss this. Come to Wyndon right away,' and hung up. The only word Raihan had been able to get in was 'Hi'.

It wasn't like he felt frustrated about it or anything. It was just a little weird.

He ordered a Flying Taxi to take him to Wyndon. A train would have taken too long, and it had sounded urgent. Probably Leon was all worked up about some hare-brained scheme he had just cooked up, and it would be best for everyone if Raihan was present to supervise.

To his surprise, what seemed like the entire rest of the Galar League, along with some other faces he hadn't seen in years, were present at Wyndon Stadium. He hailed Piers, who raised an idle hand in greeting.

'Any idea what this is about?' Piers asked. He was with his sister, the new Spikemuth Gym Leader.

'Nope. Leon sounded excited though. It better have something to do with battling. The taxi fare from Hammerlocke wasn't cheap.'

'Hopefully he didn't call us here to help out with spring cleaning or something.'

The new champion was there too, along with Leon's kid brother. Raihan was, momentarily, mildly, appalled when Leon emerged and chose to speak to Victor first instead of him, his actual boyfriend.

'Hey, Victor! You made it here too, Hop!' Leon enthused. 'And you said you were too busy with your studies. You guys ready? Come on, let's head to the Battle Court to talk!'

'Well, I was, but I thought you'd talk my ear off if I didn't say I'd come,' Hop retorted.

Despite his snide remarks during Leon's grand explanation, Raihan did think Leon's Galarian Star Tournament was a great idea. As everyone went back to the lobby to talk amongst themselves and decide their partners, Raihan hung back in a corner. Fortunately, before he could start worrying about what he would do if Leon didn't ask him, Leon did.

'Let's go, Raihan! We're together, right?' Leon said by way of asking him to partner up with him.

'I was beginning to think you'd forgotten,' Raihan replied.

'Huh?' Leon blushed as Raihan's meaning registered. 'Don't mess around! This is serious, you know.'

'Yeah, yeah.' Raihan grinned. 'So what's the game plan?'

'I was thinking of bringing Aegislash, Dragapult, and Charizard, of course. What do you think? If you want to set the sand first turn with Flygon, Aegislash will be the perfect partner. He has King's Shield too, so you can fire off Earthquakes every other turn to hit both our opponents' Pokemon!'

Of course Leon already had the perfect plan. He probably had it all worked out even while he was putting things in place for the tournament to go off.

'It feels kind of weird, to be honest, battling with you instead of against you,' Raihan said. 'Dunno if I'm gonna like it.'

'I already know we're going to be the perfect team,' Leon said, clapping Raihan on the shoulder. Alas, before Raihan could reply or even bask in the warmth of his smile, Leon had already let go and turned around to speak to the other contestants.

But Raihan was not to be deterred. When they got to the locker room to wait for their first match, Raihan tapped him on the shoulder, then kissed him.

'Cut it out!' Leon put his hands on his shoulders and held him back. 'We're here for business, not for pleasure!'

'So you don't want me to kiss you?' Raihan said with a raised eyebrow.

'I-it's not like I don't want you to kiss me,' Leon mumbled.

Taking advantage of his momentary hesitation, Raihan attacked him again. He felt Leon mutter a complaint as he slid his arms around him, but he didn't push him away this time - at least, not until Raihan started kissing his neck.

'Raihan, come on,' Leon groaned. 'Later!'

'Fine.' Raihan didn't want to put any less than 100% into this battle either. 'I just haven't seen you in weeks, and you won't sext me.'

'I won't?' Leon said with surprise. Raihan rolled his eyes. Trust him to not even realise it.

'Alright, Mr. Chairman. Let's go wow the crowd.'

Just like the year before when he had lost the championship title, Leon was more excited than disappointed about losing.

'Our new champion is amazing! He's a totally different champion from me, but he's so strong. And you know what? It's because of Hop too! I'm sure Victor couldn't be half as strong if it wasn't for Hop. When I came back to Postwick to give Hop a Pokemon, I gave Victor one too because I hoped he'd be the rival Hop needs to get stronger. I never dreamed that things would turn out ... so brilliantly! They have the most amazing rivalry. And that Hop! Even though he's studying to become a Pokemon Professor now, he hasn't let up on his skills as a Trainer one bit! I'm not sure if I could win in a one-on-one battle against him right now. I might not!'

Raihan listened with amusement and more than a little fondness to Leon's raving.

'Even better than ours?' he said.

'Our what?'

'Our rivalry.'

'Maybe. You and I are better partners than rivals anyway.'

It was impossible not to melt in the face of the full force of Leon's personality. 'Idiot,' he said under his breath as he took a swig of his drink.

'I'm an idiot? You were the one trying to assault me before the match!'

'Can you blame me?'

'I guess not.' Leon relaxed. 'I've missed you too.'

'Oh yeah? I couldn't tell.'

'Don't say that. It's hard to talk properly over the phone, so I end up not saying anything.' Leon leaned across the space between them on the couch to press their sides together. 'You know if I could, I'd make you stay here in Wyndon with me.'

Raihan laughed. 'You wouldn't want to stay with me in Hammerlocke?'

'I can't do that!'

'Well, I can't stay here either. Guess you're going to have to put up with a long-distance relationship for now.'

'You too. If you ever need me to tell you I love you, you just have to ask.'

That was really too much to take. Raihan seized the back of Leon's neck and kissed him hard. Only in the back of his mind could he acknowledge that he might just want to consider doing that in the future.
