Where Shines the Sun Aslant (Original Work)
Title: Where Shines the Sun Aslant
Fandom: Original Work
Characters: Hilbert of Rasfura/Solange of Fleuyan (Conquering Warlord/Princess of Conquered Kingdom)
Word Count: 42k
Rating: T
Summary: When Hilbert the Conqueror and his people raid the kingdom of Fleuyan, Princess Solange is sure that death is awaiting her. Hilbert's proposal that she marry him doesn't sound much better either, but afraid of the consequences for her people, Solange reluctantly agrees. Contrary to her expectations of being the tyrant king's bride, Hilbert's gentle treatment of her begins to change her perception of both him and their relationship.
Notes: I'm actually so sad I finished writing this so hopefully that points to it being as good a read as it was a write.

Under this cut is an overview of the story, contains both spoilers for the story and information that is not in the story at all.
Setting: The story takes place in the kingdom of Fleuyan, which is governed by the cruel and incompetent King Sullivan at the beginning of the story. Fleuyan is one of several large kingdoms in a mountainous region. Rasfura is both a village and a region that is more than 200 miles away by the sea. The people of Fleuyan live primarily on cultivating the land and poetry is a large part of their culture. The people of Rasfura were more focused on raising livestock, but Hilbert's people have become nomadic by necessity.
Characters
Hilbert: The warlord who kills King Sullivan and takes the throne. He forces the Princess Solange to marry him in order to protect his position as the new king (well ...). In truth, a mild-mannered man who is very different from the fierce and battle-minded people he leads. The people of Rasfura have no concept of chivalry or gentlemanliness, and see such traits as a fault. All the same, it is his honesty that makes his people follow him. Two years after he came to Fleuyan, he comes to be known as Hilbert the Gentle.
Solange: The princess and heir to Fleuyan who is forced to marry Hilbert. On the surface, Solange is a sweet, gracious, and elegant member of the royal family, and she certainly has a strong sense of duty and does not hesitate to dispense care to the people around here regardless of her personal feelings towards them. Secretly, however, she is hard-headed, impatient, and short-tempered, which causes her to butt heads with Hilbert more than once. Her romantic nature (and Hilbert's own good-naturedness) soon leads her to fall in love with her husband, and she becomes deeply devoted to him.
Armand: The son of Hilbert and Solange. A precocious child, he soon grows into an honest, upstanding, principled young man. He and his parents form a very tight-knit family circle.
Ragnhild: Hilbert's sister. Despite having always been the chief's sister, she has no pretensions of status, and thinks of herself as simply another one of Hilbert's followers - except, of course, for the fact that she loves him more than anyone else in their tribe. She is quite a playful and mischievous young woman. She teaches Solange, who has been sadly deprived of such experiences from lack of siblings and friends of her own station, how to tease and be teased in turn. She begins an affair with Solange's friend Princess Gwendolyn, which ends badly.
Adalhard: Hilbert's brother in all but water. He is both Hilbert's greatest critic and supporter. An extremely shrewd and perceptive man, who does not hesitate to dispense his observations on other people's weaknesses to their faces. Despite his slight build and mediocre skills with the sword, there is no one more courageous or more trustworthy amongst Hilbert's circle.
Bertrand: The man who comes to marry Ragnhild. Originally an ordinary man from Fleuyan who runs a tailor shop in the village, he chose to attend battle training in order to better himself, and that is how he comes to meet Ragnhild. He is diffident but frank, and quietly yet faithfully loyal to Ragnhild. She is at first hesitant to return his feelings, having been so hurt by her first love, but she eventually comes to love his constancy.
