F50 1: VGC blog.

I really miss battle videos, just as a means of recording and analysing my matches. I've been thinking of getting a capture card, but I have a MacBook, which somewhat complicates the setup. I find it useful to discuss my battles though, SO, as part of my participation in this year's Fannish 50, I'll be blogging some of the battles I had today. I think that's very fannish.

Paste for my current team. Just a simple thing I threw together. There's a lot to learn in a new metagame without adding a stranger's team on top, so once I had some idea of what to expect from the meta, I threw together some Pokemon I felt comfortable with and charged in.

Battle 1

Opponent sent out Frosmoth and Abomasnow, I had Murkrow and Gholdengo. Like a fool, I Tera'd Gholdengo, forgetting that Frosmoth gets Wide Guard. After some switches, however, I was able to get rid of Abomasnow and Garchomp (which took A LOT from Foul Play). Since they used Wide Guard twice in a row, I figured they were playing it safe instead of engaging in mind games with me, so when I was down to a newly-switched-in Gholdengo and Kingambit, I Tricked Choice Specs onto Frosmoth ... and it used Wide Guard. Kingambit lived a Mystical Fire from Gardevoir thanks to Assault Vest, and a Sucker Punch finished it off from about 70%.

GOOD: Supreme Overlord was the right choice here, been dallying between that and Defiant.

FURTHER ACTION: Taunt might be good on Murkrow, but I really like everything it has now. I wish I wasn't so Ground weak. My Tera was useless in this game. Tera Kingambit might be better to hit harder, but was unnecessary. On the whole, I was bailed out by Tera just being unnecessary for me in this game. I don't know if Armarouge was necessary, obviously it felt good against a snow team, but Sylveon would have been fine too, and has a better matchup against Garchomp.

Battle 2

I FORGOT I HAVE WIDE GUARD AND ALSO I SHOULD HAVE USED TRICK ROOM, THAT WAS MY WINCON. That's all.

Battle 4

This one was weird because they lead with Toxtricity and Murkrow, I lead Gholdengo and Murkrow. I only know about Boomburst Toxtricity, which isn't going to do anything against Gholdengo, so I had no idea what Toxtricity would do. Turns out Overdrive is a spread sound-based move, although it was Throat Spray, so both my mons survived the first turn. Then they sent out Slaking, which is another thing I had no idea what it would do, so I thought I was cooked just from not knowing what to expect. I also didn't know you can switch out while loafing around. Seems unfair lol. Anyway, Kingambit and Sylveon came in and everything up so it was okay.

FURTHER ACTION: It's so hard to know when Tailwind is needed. It was necessary here to match their Tailwind, but my mons were faster anyway. Are you just supposed to like, live with it? lol

I'm starting to think that Taunt might be better over Quash. Because of Tailwind, I hardly ever need Quash. I'll keep playing and thinking about it.

I did more battles but didn't feel the need to discuss them much. In today's conclusion, I definitely feel badly Ground-weak. I may try changing Gholdengo's Tera into Flying, which is a thing I've seen. The extra power from Steel hasn't felt necessary yet, so I don't yet miss it.

Aside: Some of the minor changes they did last season are gone for some reason. Like the menu still thinks a fainted slot is active, thinks Pixilate Normal-type moves are Normal-type, etc. Things that were actually fixed at the beginning of last season. Pokemon please.
