Ability (Original Work)

Title: Ability
Prompt: week - weak
Fandom: Original Work
Characters: Alessandro Crespo, Gareth Sieghart
Summary: Gareth watched Alessandro's hands carefully.

Alessandro was sure that his son had not always watched his hands whenever they had dinner. Being one of the best bond magicians in the land, he should have been able to know the moment that Gareth began to look at his hands and why, but Gareth, as his student, had the equal ability to hide his emotions. Thus it was that Alessandro only knew from his looks, and not from any thoughts or feelings that he could detect from Gareth.

Gareth had been staying in the Sieghart Manor for the past few days in anticipation of facing Capitani. It was ruminating on this, with all the natural doubts of a father about to watch his son go to war, that caused Alessandro to realise the reason. Whenever they sat down for dinner, with a slight flick of his wrist, Alessandro would summon fork and knife into his hands. It was a habitual thing from the time he had been learning manifestation magic from his uncle and predecessor of the Sieghart family, Romano. Manifestation magic was extremely rare, and was said to be a specialty of the Sieghart family. But Gareth had never been able to master it.

Did Gareth think he didn't have a chance against Capitani unless he was able to use manifestation magic before the end of the week? Alessandro shook his head. It was a ridiculous thought. Gareth had his own strength. But Alessandro knew, had heard the whispers, that people thought Gareth to be the weakest Sieghart head born thus far. Perhaps in his eyes, his inability to master manifestation was proof of that.

'I'm proud of you, son,' Alessandro said that evening. 'You've accomplished more in the last year than I ever did throughout my time as Minister.'

Gareth flushed with bewilderment. 'That's not true,' he said on automatic.

'Yes it is,' Alessandro said with a firmness and a mental gesture that would have been felt like a steady clasp of the shoulder. Gareth was startled, and seemed all the more flustered. He returned the gesture, however, like taking hold of his hand, and although he didn't look at him, his voice was steady as he replied.

'I won't let you down, Father.'
