Broken Glass (Rune Factory 4)
Title: Broken Glass
Prompt: broken glass
Fandom: Rune Factory 4
Characters: Frey/Arthur
Summary: Frey accidentally breaks Arthur's mother's glasses.
Notes: Spoilers for Arthur's sub-marriage story. DO NOT let this fic make you think I like Arthur, I DON'T.
Frey stared at the floor, her heart beating in her ears. Arthur was going to kill her. Or he would cry, which would be even worse, and if he killed her after that, it would just be a mercy. She picked up the shards in her hand, her mind racing. Could they be repaired? If she snuck them off to Bado, could he put them back together somehow? He might charge her some exorbitant price, but she would do anything -
'Honey? What are you doing in here?'
She burst into tears. Arthur rushed into the room to hug her and she turned away as if it was possible to hide the evidence of her crimes any longer.
'I - I - I'm so s-s-s-sorry, Art,' Frey wailed. 'I bumped into the shelf and - and - and - your m-mother's g-glasses ...'
Arthur was silent for several seconds. Frey braced herself for what was coming, cursing herself in her mind for failing to take care of the one thing her husband prized above all else.
'What are you crying about, Honey? They're just a silly pair of glasses,' Arthur said gently.
'Huh?'
Frey whirled around to stare at him in shock. Her hands squeezed the glass shards and she let out a hiss of pain. Arthur took her hands and picked out the glass, placing them into his handkerchief and tutting over her carelessness all the while.
'Why did you pick them up? Look, you've got cuts all over your beautiful hands now,' he said.
'But - but they're ... your mother's glasses ...' she said lamely.
'They're nothing more than a trinket, right? I don't need a pair of glasses to remind me of what's important.'
'Oh ... Arthur ...' Tears filled her eyes again. When Arthur finished bandaging her hands, she threw her arms around him. He hugged her back with a chuckle.
'You're all I need to remember, Frey,' he said.
After everything they had been through, and all of Arthur's assurances for love, it was this that finally assured Frey once and for all that Arthur had been able to put his past to rest.
