Secret Admiration (Hades)

Title: Secret Admiration
Prompt: Secret crush
Fandom: Hades
Pairing: Hades/Persephone
Summary: As a young woman, Persephone finds solace in the gallery of Olympus.

The gallery in Olympus had become Persephone's sanctuary whenever the stress of living amongst the childish immortals who called themselves gods affected her. That chamber might have stretched for miles, filled with depictions accurate and artistic of the gods' many feats, all of them intricately beautiful regardless of their accuracy or realism. It was always quiet there. One might think that the vain and self-absorbed Olympians would enjoy gazing into their own countenances, but every time Persephone went there, the hall was devoid of life.

But its solitude was not its only appeal for young Persephone. Her heartbeat quickened every time she approached her favourite portrait as if she was about to meet its subject himself; truthfully, she was afraid of being discovered admiring it. In a certain stretch of the hall were portraits of each of the gods, including all the children of the Titans Chronos and Rhea. It was here that Persephone was drawn to, the place where she found her refuge. She walked past the image of Zeus, Hera, and Poseidon, then stopped at the portrait between her mother Demeter and the goddess Hestia.

Gazing into the cold red eyes and the forbidding countenance of Lord Hades, Persephone's heart fluttered. The elder brother to Zeus and Poseidon, yet he appeared so different to them, not only in looks, but the grave air, the grim-faced countenance, would have been alien on any of his siblings. Yet Persephone liked how different he was, admired how dignified he looked clad in his red cape and Helm of Darkness, thought his flowing moustache extraordinary.

She had met him one or two times previously, during the early days of the Earth, before he had drawn the lot of the Underworld and left for his new realm forever. They had never spoken, but she thought that she had sensed his eyes on her, once. She had wondered if he had been interested in her. His brothers had certainly expressed their interest, and if Persephone had been left to choose - or if her mother had allowed her to choose, for Demeter had closed the question before it could be asked - between the three of them, she knew who her choice would be.

Perhaps it was only in her imagination that she detected an honesty about him and perhaps he would just be the same as his brothers. But as long as she had never spoken to him, she contented herself with the thought that she would like him. As long as that was the case, the gallery and that portrait was her refuge.
