Koi ni Naritai AQUARIUM
There are so many ways to say 'I want to fall in love' in an aquatic style, but they decided to just tack on the word 'AQUARIUM' on the end haha. I do love the song though, and the introduction captured me from the very beginning. They have beautiful costumes and the aquarium backdrop is really good.
Buuuuut as catchy as the song is, there are some things I'm so not feeling. I'm not saying this because I think μ's are perfect or anything, I freely admit that I've never watched the Natsuiro Egao de 1, 2 Jump PV because it's pretty cringey to me. Natsuiro is old news though, and I think all of μ's PVs afterwards were really good. But Aquarium fell kinda flat to me. I don't think the theme of You feeling left out was strong enough to carry the whole PV, and the second half of the PV didn't feel 'new' at all. I was really looking forward to watching the PV because the preview was so good, but when I did watch it, I was disappointed that I didn't feel like I was getting anything new, it was just more of stuff that happened in the first half.
Lots of people love the homage to Snow Halation, but I thought it was sooo weird because that's been one of μ's signature for so long, it was more like they wanted Aquarium to be the new Snow Halation. I guess it doesn't really matter if no one else feels that way - but I guess we'll see. The hype is still taking over, maybe when everyone calms down we'll see some more discussion since most posts I see are just gushing.
One thing I'm confused about though is the fact that everyone seems really happy with all of the voices. Does no one else find You's and Ruby's voices really weird?! I've seen someone remark that You's voice 'sounds strained, but in a cute way', which I agree with except for the cute part. It just sounds strained. I keep expecting her voice to break while she's singing. It's not too bad when she's singing, if I'm not paying attention then I don't notice, but watching the PV, I actually winced the first few times I heard it. Same with Ruby.
I think for Ruby they were going for the 'cute innocent' angle that they did with Hanayo. Ruby even gets fired up about stuff sometimes and whatnot. But where with Kayochin it sounds totally adorable and sweet, Ruby sounds like a seven-year-old trying to sound like a five-year-old. I don't really like Ruby's character as it's presented so far either. Well, who knows, I might get used to them eventually. But it bothers me because I haven't seen anyone complaining about it, whereas people complain about Hanayo's and Kotori's voices all the time, and to me, their voices are perfect. Their duets are some of my favourite songs. Maybe it's an either-or thing. And I hope I do get used to their voices, or else I'm gonna have trouble listening to Aqours.
